What is IPL?
IPL is an in-office, light-based procedure used primarily to treat chronic Dry Eye Disease. IPL treatment has been approved by the FDA.
What does it do?
IPL uses broad spectrum light pulses to penetrate beneath the skin and close abnormal blood vessels around the meibomian glands (the oil-producing glands in your eyelids), reducing the inflammatory mediators that worsen dry eye. The gentle heat that is generated during the light pulses liquefies any oil blockages within the glands. After the actual IPL treatment Dr. Pulis will then clear any liquefied blockages using gentle expression of the eyelids, allowing the glands to function better.
What can I expect?
IPL therapy is performed over 4 total treatments, two weeks apart. Results may vary per patient, but typically patients notice results after their 3rd or 4th treatment and beyond. Patients can enjoy at least 6-12 months of relief with decreased use of artificial tears. Continuation of at-home treatment using warm compresses and eyelid cleansing is strongly recommended to maintain healthy and functional glands.
