Contact Lens Evaluations

What is a Contact Lens Evaluation?

A contact lens prescription is different from a glasses prescription. In addition to your vision correction, contact lens wear must consider the health, shape, and curvature of the cornea, as well as the way the lens fits and functions on the eye. Contact lenses are regulated by the FDA as medical devices and require ongoing evaluation to ensure they remain safe and appropriate for continued wear.

For this reason, a contact lens evaluation is required every two (2) years, or sooner if recommended by the doctor, to monitor corneal health, evaluate lens performance, and confirm that the eyes can safely tolerate continued contact lens wear.

Dr. Pulis is highly experienced in fitting a wide range of contact lenses to meet each patient’s unique visual and ocular health needs. This includes single vision contact lenses, toric lenses for astigmatism, multifocal lenses, monovision lenses, scleral lenses, and other specialty lens designs.

What does insurance cover?

Vision insurance providers will often offer coverage or discounts toward contact lens services. In many cases, this benefit is separate from your routine vision exam and eyewear materials benefits.

In addition to coverage for the contact lens evaluation, vision insurance plans also provide a materials allowance that may be applied toward the purchase of contact lenses. Most plans allow this benefit to be used toward either contact lenses or glasses, but not both during the same benefit period. Coverage and eligibility vary by individual insurance plan.
