What is Meibography?
Meibography is a specialized image of your meibomian glands. These glands produce oils, and they are located on the backside of our top and bottom eyelids. Meibography is used as a diagnostic tool to diagnose dry eye disease and meibomian gland dysfunction.
Meibomian Glands and Dry Eye
The meibomian glands produce oil (meibum) to the surface of the eyes. This meibum acts as glue to the tear film and prevents the tears from evaporating too quickly. When the glands become dysfunctional they do not produce high-quality oil and the glands become clogged. Without this protective oil layer, the tears on the eyes evaporate quickly causing the eye to become dry. Being able to image the meibomian glands helps Dr. Pulis in designing your treatment plan and allows us to monitor for any progression.
Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) can be a cause of chronic dry eye disease, and can be treated with at-home treatment or IPL therapy.
