Specialized Contact Lenses
Unlike standard contact lenses, specialized contact lenses are custom-made lenses. They are designed using advanced materials and sizes to address complex prescriptions, irregular corneas, or severe dry eyes.
Common Specialized Lens Types
Scleral Lenses: These are custom-fit lenses that are designed to have a larger diameter and uses a tear-filled reservoir. They rest on the white part of the eye (the sclera) and vault over any corneal irregularities.
Hybrid Lenses: These lenses use a rigid, gas-permeable center to correct vision, surrounded by a softer edge to provide similar comfort of traditional lenses.
Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) Lenses: These lenses are made of a firm plastic to provide crisp vision for irregular eye shapes. These lenses still allow oxygen to pass through the lens to the eye.
Lens Care Reminders
Wearing contact lenses increases the risk of eye infections, inflammation, and in some cases, permanent vision loss, especially when lenses are over-worn or improperly cared for. If you experience any of the following symptoms, remove your lenses immediately and contact our clinic:
– Foreign Body Sensation – Eye pain or redness -Cloudy or foggy vision
– Watering or discharge -Decreased vision -Sensitivity to light
– NEVER sleep in your scleral lenses – ALWAYS wash your hands before touching your eyes or contacts – NEVER use tap water to rinse, clean, rewet, or store your lenses. Only use the solution appropriate for your lenses.
– NEVER reuse used solution. Always store your contacts in fresh solution and dump the old solution after use.
– Replace scleral lens tool and storage case every 90 DAYS.
