Medication Toxicity

Medication toxicity in the eye can occur when ocular tissues, such as the retina, optic nerve, or cornea, are damaged by systemic or topical drugs. Certain medications are well-known for causing ocular toxicity, and patients who take these medications require proactive monitoring with advanced imaging.

Common Medications w/ Risks:

  • Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil)
  • GLP-1’s (Semiglutide, Ozempic, etc.)
  • Corticosteroids (inhaled or topical)

Make our staff aware of any medications that you are taking by bringing a list with you to your appointment. At that time Dr. Pulis will determine if a follow-up with advanced imaging is needed. These tests can detect drug toxicity in it’s early stages where treatment is more effective and before permanent vision loss develops.
