Diabetic Eye Exams

What is a Diabetic Exam?

For patients who are Type 1 Diabetic, Type 2 Diabetic, or Pre-Diabetic and currently taking medication, an annual diabetic eye exam is considered the standard of care. Dr. Pulis utilizes Optomap retinal imaging with specialized retinal filters to evaluate retinal tissues and blood vessels for diabetes-related changes.

Why do I need a Diabetic Exam?

This exam is intended to detect diabetic retinopathy and other diabetes-related ocular changes, which may develop without noticeable symptoms and can lead to permanent vision loss if not identified and treated early.

A current diabetic eye exam is required prior to finalizing or updating a glasses/contact prescription, as fluctuations in blood sugar levels can affect visual stability and prescription accuracy. These recommendations are supported by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the American Optometric Association (AOA).

Does insurance cover this exam?

This exam is more comprehensive and medically focused than the retinal assessment performed during a routine vision exam. Diabetic eye exams are considered medical evaluations and are billed to your medical health insurance provider rather than vision insurance. Coverage and benefits vary by individual insurance plan.
