What is a Comprehensive Eye Exam?
A comprehensive/routine eye exam is the type of exam that most people think of when they think about the eye doctor. At a routine eye exam, Dr. Pulis will evaluate the patient’s need for a glasses prescription and examine the general health of the eyes from front to back. When checking the health of the eye, Dr. Pulis is checking for any signs of ocular or systemic disease that needs monitoring or treatment. After your exam, you will receive a copy of your updated glasses prescription. You will have the opportunity to browse our Optical shop for a new frame or have new lenses put into a frame you already have that you love!
What does insurance cover?
If you carry vision insurance, your comprehensive exam and refraction should be covered once annually (copay amounts may vary). Some insurance plans have started to cover the required Optomap Retinal Imaging with a copay that is due in addition to the exam copay. For material benefits, such as glasses or contact lenses, vision insurance plans will only let you use your benefits for one or the other. You CANNOT use vision insurance to purchase both glasses and contact lenses.
- Note: If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:
dry eye, flashes/floaters, eye pain, chemical burn, sudden vision loss, “cobwebs” in vision, foreign body in eye(s), red & itchy eyes, sudden double vision, trauma to the eye(s), sudden onset of pain, severe light sensitivity, contact lens associated pain, red eye, etc.
These may be signs of a more serious medical issue and would not be considered a routine eye exam but will instead be submitted to your medical insurance. Co-pays and deductibles apply. Click here to learn more about Insurance and Finance.
What if I want contact lenses?
Dr. Pulis is able to evaluate for contact lenses at the same appointment as your comprehensive exam. A contact lens evaluation is needed every two (2) years or sooner, to ensure the health and shape/curvature of the cornea can withstand continued contact lens wear.
